Mathematics

At Montrose Primary School, we are committed to delivering a high-quality Mathematics program that builds strong numeracy skills and fosters a love of learning in every student.

Our Mathematics curriculum is aligned with the Victorian Curriculum and provides students with a solid foundation in Number, Algebra, Measurement, Space, Statistics, and Probability. Students are encouraged to become confident and flexible thinkers who can apply mathematical strategies to real-world situations.

Key features of our program include:

  • Daily Mathematics Lessons: Structured and purposeful lessons that cater to individual learning needs through whole-class instruction, small group work, and targeted support.

  • Hands-On Learning: Students engage with a range of concrete materials, games, and digital tools to explore and understand mathematical concepts.

  • Differentiated Instruction: Our teachers use data to tailor learning experiences and challenge students at their point of need.

  • Problem-Solving Focus: We support students to develop critical thinking and reasoning skills through rich problem-solving tasks and open-ended questions.

  • Real-World Connections: Learning activities are designed to be relevant and meaningful, helping students see the importance of maths in their everyday lives.

  • Assessment and Feedback: Ongoing formative and summative assessment guides instruction and supports student growth.

We aim to nurture mathematical thinkers who are curious, resilient, and equipped with the skills they need to thrive in future learning and life.

The Launch Explore Discuss/Summarise approach is a research based, best practise model that is used regularly across all classrooms in our school. Within this model, students of all ages and abilities are provided with opportunities to develop important mathematical dispositions like working collaboratively, sharing their reasoning, and recording their thinking in organised and systematic ways. It is also the model that best allows students to develop their ability to engage with the critical Mathematical Proficiencies of Fluency, Reasoning, Understanding & Problem Solving.

Rich maths tasks cover many areas of the Mathematics curriculum:
