Student Mental Health & Wellbeing

At Montrose Primary School, student wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We are committed to creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where every child feels connected, cared for, and ready to learn.

We know that mental health and wellbeing are essential to academic success, personal growth, and positive relationships. That’s why we take a whole-school approach to wellbeing—supporting students socially, emotionally and psychologically throughout their primary school years.

Our approach includes:

  • Wellbeing Programs:
We teach evidence-based programs that support emotional literacy, resilience, friendship skills, and positive coping strategies. These are integrated into classroom learning and school culture.

  • School Values in Action:
Our school values—Respect, Kindness, Being Inclusive, Personal Best, and Resilience—are explicitly taught, modelled and celebrated. They guide behaviour and build a strong sense of belonging.

  • Safe and Supportive Environment:
Every student is known and supported by staff who care. We foster a culture of respect and kindness in classrooms, the playground, and across the whole school.

  • Student Voice:
We empower students to express their ideas, ask for help, and take part in decision-making. Leadership roles and class discussions help build confidence and a sense of agency.

  • Targeted Support:
Our wellbeing team, including Wellbeing Leader, Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader, Principal and Assistant Principal work closely with families and external professionals to support students with additional needs.

  • Partnerships with Families:
We value strong relationships with parents and carers and work together to support student wellbeing. Regular communication and early intervention are key.

  • Respectful Relationships and Child Safety:
We are a Child Safe School and teach students how to build respectful relationships, stay safe, and speak up if they need help.
